Winnipeg is within the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. That relationship is central to acknowledging this place.

We honour the Red River Métis, whose National Homeland includes the place where we work. We recognize their distinct identity, history, languages and continuing leadership, and the families and communities carrying Métis culture into the future.

Understanding this relationship

A Distinct Identity with Roots in This Place.

The Manitoba Métis Federation describes the Red River Métis as a distinct people with a shared history, culture, kinship and homeland. Métis identity should not be reduced to a general label for anyone with mixed Indigenous and European ancestry.

Fiddle music, dance and other cultural practices are part of the Red River Métis account of nationhood. They belong within a living community, alongside language, family, political life and present day aspirations.

Michif & Métis Languages

The Louis Riel Institute provides learning resources for Métis languages and recognizes different language varieties. The Assembly’s linked file is named Michif. Its statement is one source document, not a single standard for every Métis speaker or every Métis language.
